Brian Travers, Pitcher

Brian Travers

Brian "Doc" Travers joined the Grays in 2000, and became the team captain late in the 2003 season after the departure of Kevin Faria. He has pitched the great majority of the team's overhand games since joining the team. His left-handed delivery, pinpoint control and clever curves have baffled some of the best batters in vintage ball. His style is well suited for 1884 base ball, much like the great Old Hoss Radbourn's. He has often pitched complete games on consecutive days, or twice in a day, as tournament schedules have demanded, because he knows how to trust his fielders and saves his best fastball only for the most critical moments. He can count among his moments of glory two heroic complete-game victories over the hard-hitting Hartford Senators to close out the 2002 and 2004 Hartford Invitationals. Doc is rumored to be a physician, but does not appear to possess a valid licence to practice medicine, and he has not as a rule provided medical services to his teammates. He is, however, a heavy batsman and often plays in the outfield when not pitching. As the captain, his grueling practice regimen is responsible for the team's famously sculpted physiques. Because he is a left-handed pitcher, Travers has been offered contracts by several modern major league teams who desire him as a spot reliever, but he believes that anything less than a nine-inning performance is unmanly and has so far refused these offers.
