Charlie Dryer, Pitcher
Charlie "Suds" Dryer joined the Grays late in the 1999 season on the recommendation of his long-time battery mate Gilligan Faria, and promptly established himself as one of the hardest throwing overhand pitchers in all of vintage ball. He was soon slowed down by a career-threatening knee injury, and the arm troubles that have always plagued many of the best fireballers, causing him to spend much of the 2000 season as an umpire. More recently he has suffered ankle problems, broken fingers, and removal of an internal organ. On several occasions, local sporting buffs have whispered that his playing career was over. However, Suds remains one of the team's best batsmen, and has proven to be an able man at the first and third sacks, as well as a true student of the game. He is also sometimes brought in as a change pitcher to good effect, although he is rarely called upon to pitch a full nine innings. A gritty and competitive player, he is a particular favorite of the lady cranks across New England, and plays in the true sprit of the 1884 Providence Grays.
