Harry Arundel, Extra Pitcher
30-year-old Harry Arundel, a Philadelphia native, had spent one disastrous year in Pittsburgh as one of the worst pitchers in the American Association in 1882. The 1884 Grays dragged him up to pitch one meaningless late-season game, giving Hoss Radbourn a much-needed rest. On October 10, he beat Cleveland on the road 11 to 2, on a day when the weather was reported to be "too raw to be favorable for good playing." Arundel won the game, allowing only one earned run on eight hits. He never pitched in the majors again, and died in Cleveland on March 25, 1904.
